Safe Furniture for Kids’ Rooms

Every parent knows that kids view furniture differently than grown-ups do.  They don’t see a bed. It’s a bouncy platform.  Chairs are for climbing and building forts and taking apart. Ottomans are stools for getting to things that are otherwise out of reach.  My tiny son learned pretty early to climb out of his crib. Fearing a fall, I added a bookshelf next to the crib to cover the end piece that he had used as a ladder. The next morning he thanked me for providing a “stool” to make it easier to get up and down!

Rather than worry endlessly about injuries to your child, why not be proactive in child-proofing their rooms with furniture that will not injure them?  Here are some suggestions for safe furniture, designed specifically for children, which will not harm them in their use or in their play.

Foam sofas or chairs and all kinds of beanbags are the safest kind of furniture for kids.  In this discussion, we’ll refer to these as “soft furniture.”  Special safety zippers with fabric coverings on beanbags and foam chairs prevent scratches on tender skin, but keep the contents of beanbags, in particular, safely inside.

Kids love to flop down on chairs! Most moms get super tired of saying “no” (or “NO!”) to such treatment of their furniture, but soft furniture is the one type of furniture that is made for serious flopping.  There’s almost no way they’ll be injured, because the foam and polystyrene beans will comfortably cushion their flop. There is no wood frame to cause injuries that will be sending you with your little one to the emergency room.

Concerned about your child’s posture?  Beanbag chairs and foam furniture are safe furniture choices to prevent sore backs because they conform to kids’ shapes as they sit or lounge. They provide support for little backs and shoulders. They even good choices for kids who were previously injured and need a soft surface to reduce strain on sore limbs and joints.

Other plus’s for soft furniture include “extreme dragability.”  Kids love to build forts out of soft furniture, and can drag them around to create a new room arrangement at will.  There is nothing about soft furniture that can injure your child. Even a collapsing fort will not injure or smother them.

Best of all, many foam chairs and sofas open out to sleepover beds to accommodate little cousins and other overnight guests!

For kids who have the unfortunate tendency to roll out of bed during a sound sleep, foam sofa sleepers, studio chairs, and inexpensive loungers (called Lounger Futons) on wood frames are set low to the ground by design. They all rest only a few inches off the floor. Kids won’t necessarily sleep through a tumble, but the fall won’t injure them.

Futonsandbeanbags.com is a great source for all of these types of products and more, with affordable prices for all families.  Parents need a little luck and a lot of smart choices to keep their kids safe during childhood.  We want to protect them, and sometimes that only takes a little extra effort and money directed to providing them with safe furniture from the start.
